Village working to repair the streetlights

As a follow-up to your article regarding the lighting conditions on Route 878/Nassau Expressway, “Darkness on the edge of Lawrence” (Feb. 1-7), it is important to note that the Village of Lawrence, looking past technicalities and details of jurisdiction, has taken the initiative to restore lighting to this roadway that is so vital to the entire area.

At its own expense (which to date, amounts to almost $90,000) Lawrence employed village personnel and resources, and retained several electrical companies to investigate, diagnose and repair a problem that required (and continues to require) more than mere maintenance.

We are pleased to be joined in this effort by State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, who immediately recognized the complexity of the issue, and has been actively engaged in procuring state assistance to address this hazardous condition.

Together with Kaminsky, the Village of Lawrence is committed to overcoming red tape and the insidious aftermath of Superstorm Sandy to pierce the darkness and ensure the safety of our residents and neighbors.
