Hewlett grad wins national radio award

Elissa Candiotti who graduated Syracuse University last month and from Hewlett High School four years ago, won the national competition for the radio category in the 2017-2018 Hearst National Journalism Awards Championship, and then competed against four other finalists for the top prize. Candiotti finished fourth and took home $1,500.

Her two radio stories focused on “the increasing cost of housing in the Bay Area.” A former Herald intern, Candiotti wrote about the trip and volunteer work she and 20 or so other Syracuse students did in Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in December for the newspaper.
