The Long Island Sharsheret Committee marked the organization’s 18th anniversary with the annual barbecue and siyum (Hebrew for completion of any unit of Torah study) at the Woodmere Club on Aug. 6.

Sandy Berkowitz and Ellin Gurvitch, both deceased, the mothers of Suzanne and Barry Gurvitch, were remembered at the Tuesday event. Riva Goldschmiedt was the special guest speaker.

Sharsheret is a nationwide nonprofit that aims to improve the lives of Jewish women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer by offering personalized support and saving lives through educational outreach. Sharsheret programs serve all women and men.
