Inwood golf course make’s top 50 list

Fifty existing golf courses have hosted the U.S. Open, including Shinnecock Hills that is hosting its fifth such tournament June 14 to 17. The Southampton course, is considered a classic and is rated No 1. among GolfWeek’s Best Top 100 classic or modern tracks. Ten criteria rated the course, including memorability of specific holes and the “Walk in the Park” test.

Inwood Country Club, which hosted the 1923 U.S. Open, is rated 49th. Split between a parkland style and links style, its 6,639 yards, par 71, has subtle difficulties that challenge experts and novices. Along with the Open championship, won by Bobby Jones, and the Professional Golf Association Championship, won by Walter Hagen in 1921, Inwood has hosted many metro area PGA events.

Other Long Island courses on the list: Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, a classic at No. 10; Garden City Golf Course, a classic, at No. 12; and Fresh Meadow in Great Neck, No. 46.
