Overcast Lawrence defeats Great Neck for league honors
The Lawrence Men’s Tennis Club senior team — captain Barry Straus, Gary Adler, Ron Jackson, Gary Post, Stu Schor, Alan Smagler, Bobby Tehel and Paul Wilson — upended the Great Neck squad to capture the North Shore league title under the newly lit tennis courts of the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club on Sept. 12.
In the four years Lawrence has taken part in the North Shore League, the squad has placed second in the league twice and now first. Great Neck has won the league title the past three years. Led by Strauss, Lawrence won three of the four doubles matches. Smagler, considered a steady hand, hit the winning shot.
Team members said their overall effort to gain home court advantage for the semifinal and final matches helped to boost their chances of winning.
