Lawrence honors life-saving first responders

More than two months after several first responders teamed up to help revive basketball referee Larry Miller. The Inwood resident suffered a heart attack a Dec. 1 game. Lawrence School District officials honored them on Feb. 6. Miller, a ref for 48 years and a retired police officer, collapsed in the third quarter of a home game against Locust Valley.

The district’s athletic trainer, Richard Ravo, and Dr. Nima Jalali, an emergency room doctor who has been attending Lawrence sporting events as he enters the sports medicine profession, and Hofstra students, David Lebron and Jennifer Lopez, Lawrence athletic-training interns and Michael Spinelli assisted in saving Miller, performing cardi pulmonary resuscitation before the automated external defibrillator was retrieved.

Patrick Frawley, a Lawrence football and softball coach who just a completed an EMT course as part of his training at the Suffolk County Police Academy, performed rescue breaths.
