Behind 25 points from junior guard Tyler St. Furcy and 13 from senior backcourt mate Andrew Buskey, the Lawrence Woodmere Academy Tigers defeated Collegiate 51-44 in the New York State Association of Independent Schools Class B championship at Fieldston in the Bronx on Feb. 26. Last year, LWA captured the Class C crown.

“[The] postseason was a total team effort,” said head basketball coach Jeff Weiss, who also doubles as LWA’s athletic director. “With (star center) Aidan [Igiehon] in foul trouble in the NYSAIS final, others stepped it up. Collegiate has won six of last 10 NYSAIS Class B Federation championships, so beating an independent power school quite an accomplishment. Tyler St Furcy was dynamic in the final, scoring 25 points.”

LWA advances to the Class B state Federation basketball tournament of champions at the Cool Insuring Arena in upstate Glen Falls on March 23 and 24. The Tigers will play the PSAL champion in the first round for the chance to go to the finals.
