Doris Elizabeth Nastro (McMahon) of Lynbrook and Naples, Fla., died on Jan. 22 at her daughter Laura’s home surrounded by her loving family. She was 88.

Nastro was born on June 6, 1929, in the Bronx, the eldest of four children to the late Michael and Lillian (Reddan) McMahon. Her beloved sisters Maureen (Maurice Kenny) and Joan (Harry Bayer) predeceased her along with their husbands, as did her favorite brother, Frank McMahon.

Nastro was raised on Garfield Place in Park Slope, Brooklyn in the St. Francis Xavier parish. She attended Bishop McDonald High School. After graduation, she went to work for C.J. Devine, a Wall Street investment firm. During those years, Doris moved with her mother and sister, Joan, to Lindenhurst, to make sure that her mother was well cared for.

She married her beloved husband, Frank Nastro, on Feb. 6, 1954. She continued to work at C.J. Devine until the birth of her first child, and then stayed home for a number of years to raise her family. She returned to work for the Becker Agency of Lynbrook in 1974 in order to put her four children and husband through college, for which they were grateful.

Nastro was the driving force behind the successes of her husband and four children. She managed the family finances, took care of all her children’s needs, pushing them to continue their education and pursue their passions, and enabled Frank to focus on his FDNY and coaching responsibilities, where he had much success.

Nastro was a lifelong learner and reader, always curious about the world around her. She was also an excellent cook and avid traveler. Over the years, especially after they retired and were living part of the year in Naples, the Nastros — along with their extended group of friends — traveled extensively, visiting Ireland, Italy, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska and many other places.

Nastro loved to entertain and cook for her family and friends. Holidays and dinners at her house were filled with delicious food and much laughter.

In addition to her husband, Nastro leaves behind her loving children, Elise (Doug) Rosenberry, Paul, Laura, and Francis (Nancy) Nastro. She is the cherished  “Nani” to Drew and Devon Rosenberry, and Emma and Grace Nastro. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Maureen McMahon, and her brother-in-law and his wife, Dan and Margaret Nastro, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her caring niece, Claire Kenny, with whom she spent much time.

A wake was held on Jan. 25 at Flinch and Bruns Funeral Home, Hempstead Avenue, Lynbrook. A funeral Mass was celebrated the following day at Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church, Lynbrook.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris’s memory to The Thomas R. Elsasser Fund, Uniformed Firefighters Association, 204 East 23rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10010 or Make-A-Wish Metro N.Y., 111 Marcus Ave., Suite LL22, Lake Success, N.Y. 11042.
