Nassau Expressway to be closed at night

Posted

Beginning Sept. 5, motorists should expect overnight lane closures on both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Nassau Expressway between Rockaway Turnpike and Burnside Avenue.

In addition, lane closures will take place on northbound and southbound lanes of Rockaway Turnpike between the Nassau Expressway and Peninsula Boulevard as well as on the eastbound and westbound lanes of Burnside Avenue between Henry Street and West End Avenue. The lane closures will continue on Sept. 6 and 7 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The lane closures are necessary to re-stripe the roadways in preparation for traffic shifts and detours along the Nassau Expressway and Rockaway Turnpike. During construction, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Nassau Expressway and three lanes of traffic in each direction on Rockaway Turnpike.

This is part of the $130 million New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project to improve the safety and operation of the Nassau Expressway between Rockaway Turnpike and Burnside Avenue, as well as improve the resiliency of the roadway as an Emergency Coastal Storm Evacuation Route.

Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, obey any speed restrictions that may be in place and follow the instructions of flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew.
