Remembering Parkland, traveling in Argentina, supporting prom

Lawrence Woodmere Academy welcomes the spring! In the upper school, we are now in the fourth quarter. Even though the school year is ending soon, this does not mean the activities stop.

In March we demonstrated our support for the “March For Our Lives” movement by taking part in a walkout on March 14. At 10 a.m., students from the upper school and middle school, as well as members of the faculty, staff, and administration, walked out to the front lawn in silence to memorialize the students and teachers, 17 people in all, who died in the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on Feb. 14. From 10 to 10:17 a.m., a student read a name of one of the slain each minute. In addition to participating in the national walkout, LWA’s Helping Hands Club organized to join the march in New York City and in Long Beach, where several of our students spoke in front of the large crowd.

In sports, we congratulate the boys’ varsity basketball team for making it to the state championship! The team traveled to Glenn Falls to play against Fannie Lou Hamer. It was a close game, but LWA lost by 42-39. Don’t worry; we will win next time!

The upper school performed “Catch Me If You Can,” a play about a con-man’s life and how he flees from the FBI. Andrew Feldman played the con man, and Harrison Schwartz played the FBI agent. It was musically thrilling, and the choreography was excellent! It was a wonderful way to end the year for the Upper School Theater Program.

This week, a group of our students are traveling in Argentina. They are spending seven days there, flying to Buenos Aires and to Puerto Iguazú. They will be visiting the Iguazu Falls and Argentine cowboy ranches. They will get to experience Argentina’s rich culture and way of life.

Finally, please support our 2018 prom! At the Chipotle Mexican Grill at 331 Rockaway Tpke., in Lawrence, from 4 to 8 p.m. on April 16, students from LWA will be handing out fliers. If you present the flier when you purchase a meal, half the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the LWA prom fund. The support would be appreciated greatly!
