Rockville Centre Wing-Off supports breast cancer research

Maple Pointe held its traditional wing-tasting extravaganza on Oct. 10 to raise money for breast cancer research, during which guests came hungry and left satisfied.

Certain local restaurants won bragging rights at the Rockville Centre assisted living facility’s ninth annual Wing-Off in the courtyard at 260 Maple Ave., which benefitted South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center.

Maple Pointe has raised more than $100,000 over the past eight years, according to Tammy Marshall, the facility’s executive director. Last year, the event brought in nearly $18,000, and the goal this year was $20,000. Marshall said organizers were still counting the fundraising total as the Herald went to press Tuesday.

Eighteen businesses from Rockville Centre, Oceanside and Island Park participated, and guests filled out ballots to crown after trying out each establishment’s wings.

“They pull all the stops with their recipes,” Marshall said. “They’re not just hot wings, there’s some insane flavors.” She noted that there were pumpkin, salted caramel, and even green tea-flavored wings to taste.

One guest in particular, 3-year-old Isabella Cerisier, liked the sweet-tasting pineapple upside down wings from the Pantry Diner. “I like wings,” she said with a big smile, a piece of chicken falling off her upper lip.

This year’s winning eateries included Rockville Centre’s MacArthur Park Restaurant & Pub, Bucket List and Bowery Bar & Fare.

“It’s all about the fundraiser,” said second-time winner Tommy Mahoney, owner of MacArthur Park, who has attended every year.
