Wendy Rossberg, of Woodmere, a second-grade teacher at Oaks Elementary School No. 3 in the Oceanside School District, was named as one of the New York state finalists in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

As a state-finalist in math (there are three), Rossberg’s nomination will be reviewed by a national selection committee in Washington, D.C., which determines the winners from each state. The state selection committee is made up of math and science educators. The White House announces the awards each year. It is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.

Winners receive a certificate signed by the U.S. President, a paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and an opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation. A winner is typically announced before the new school year gets underway, award officials said.
