Taking their shots with archery

Cub Scout Pack 1818, the only Cub Scout Pack on Long Island geared towards accommodating Orthodox Jewish boys visited the Schiff Scout Reservation to learn about archery at the sprawling, 400-acre site on June 10.

The nearly 24 boys were excited to learn archery skills and how to handle real bows and arrows, a scout understands that safety is a priority and is essential to any activity. Pack 1818 paid close attention to Theodore Roosevelt Council Board Member, Gino Scartozzi, as he taught the boys crucial rules of archery including the importance of not making noise that would distract those getting ready to shoot, not walking to retrieve your arrows while shooting is still in progress, and the correct way to pick up your arrows so that you won’t get hurt.

Neesan, 7, from the Wolf Den, was very pleased after practicing with his bow and arrow for the first time “I [scored] a 3 on the target and Shimon [his twin brother] got a 2! I want to do it again next year!”

Pack 1818, chartered by the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC, held its first-ever Blue and Gold ceremony on June 17, where the scout families celebrated all of their sons’ accomplishments during this inaugural year in scouting.
