The New York SUP Open returning to Long Beach

It was a day of dramatic action in Long Beach on Sept. 22, 2018, for the final rounds of the APP World Surfing Tour’s first stop for the 2018 season in New York. Long Beach delivered with waves that were in the two- to –three-foot range for the final rounds of both the men’s and women’s competitions at the New York SUP Open — a first to be held in the City of Long Beach.
The APP World Tour is the Professional World Championship Tour for the sport of paddlesurfing, and the action took place in front of the Hurley Surf Center powered by Skudin Surf, which played a major role in bringing the event to town. The world’s best descended on Long Beach, with pros Sean Poynter and Iballa Moreno winning the men’s and women’s contests, respectively.
“Long Beach delivered,” organizers said in a news release. “The waves were clean and in the two- to three-foot range for the final rounds of both the men and women’s competition and it was a day to remember at the New York SUP Open.”
This year’s New York SUP Open kicks off in Long Beach on Aug. 31 and runs through Sept. 7.
The opening weekend will feature open and youth technical racing competitions and a charity downwind run supporting the local nonprofit Surf For All, to compliment the World Championship Tour Surfing Competition and an all new open SUP longboard exhibition event. The contest will also include a number of events and activities around town.
The event will lead into a pro racing component that will kick off with sprint racing in Long Beach on Sept. 5 at 10 a.m., followed by the unique long distance race around the Statue of Liberty that will allow participants to take in New York City’s landmarks and skyline, followed by a festival at Pier 25.
