The water main break that occurred on Feb. 13 at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Peterson Place in Lynbrook affected the Five Towns as there was sporadic water pressure in Cedarhurst and Lawrence villages. Officials said it has been repaired.

A representative of New York American Water told the Herald that it was a 24-inch main break, which was likely caused by an infrastructure issue due to cold weather. They said that the damage was to an “enormous part of the system.” The break also impacted East Rockaway, Malverne and Valley Stream.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM RICH KERN, NEW YORK AMERICAN  "Crews were immediately dispatched to isolate the leak, and within an hour the system pressure was restored to normal," said Rich Kern, vice president of Operations at New York American Water. "Given the size of pipe and water flowing through it, damage was caused to the roadway and New York American Water worked through the night to ensure road repairs were made before the morning commute."

Repairing the broken water pipe also impacted traffic as Nassau County police cordoned off Peninsula Boulevard from Mill Road north to Sunrise Highway. Vehicles were shifted to Broadway and West Broadway causing traffic snarls throughout the day.

“We had approximately 45 minutes with low to no water,” said Lawrence School District Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen. “We were in the middle of contingency planning when thankfully the water company had us back to full service.”
