Elmont, Franklin Square school budgets pass

The Franklin Square School District budget passed with more than 72 percent of the vote on Tuesday night, May 19. There were 827 votes in favor of the budget, and 316 against. Also on the ballot was the transportation capital proposition, which passed with almost 72 percent of the vote.

The Franklin Square budget-to-budget increase for the 2015-16 proposal was presented as 1.3 percent, and the tax levy increase is 1.7 percent. The budget goes up to $37.7 million, an increase of $1.5 million. The estimated annual tax increase for the average home would be $53.

There were two seats up on the Franklin Square Board of Education. Incumbent Trustee Helen Hoffman garnered 646 votes, and new board candidate Joseph Lewinger 643 votes. Both ran unchallenged.

Elmont voters approved their $84.8 million budget by 76 percent of the 1,390 ballots cast, 1,060 to 330. The budget is a 1.2 percent increase. The tax levy is not rising at all, at $54.7 million.

Elmont also approved their library budget, by 78 percent of the vote.

Elmont school board Trustees Kevin Denehy, Patrick Emegwali and Leslyn Stewart ran unopposed, and received 793 votes, 634 votes and 675 votes, respectively. Library board member Livingstone Young won 667 votes.
