Elmont man charged with abusing three disabled people

An Elmont man was arrested for abusing three people with developmental disabilities while they were in his care, Special Prosecutor Patricia E. Gunning said on Monday.

According to Gunning, who works for the New York state Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, Danny Theodore, 29, punched the three victims while working at a day habilitation program operated by IRI employed him.

“Individuals receiving services deserve to feel safe and be treated with dignity and respect,” said Gunning. “The Justice Center and the District Attorneys of this state will prosecute staff, like this defendant who abuse the people who they have been entrusted to care for.”

Theodore has been charged with Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person, a felony, along with other multiple misdemeanors. He was arraigned in Nassau District Court on April 15. He has been terminated from his job at the habilitation center.

Theodore pled not guilty to the charges and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to return to court on April 26.
