HS football: Week 8

Posted

Some Nassau County High School football teams will play their final game of 2012 this week, while 32 others will get ready for November and the championship chase.

One of the bigger games on the final Saturday of the regular season kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Marion Street Elementary School when Lynbrook hosts Plainedge. The Owls, winners of two of their last three, can secure a Conference III playoff spot with a victory over the Red Devils, coupled with a Floral Park loss to Lawrence. The Golden Tornadoes are home and seeking an undefeated regular season.

Also in Conference III, Hewlett will try to end a four-game slide and secure a playoff berth when Sewanhaka visits for a 6 p.m. start. At 1:30 p.m., Valley Stream South play its Homecoming game against South Side.

Jockeying for the top five seeds in Conference I, the result of the Massapequa-Farmingdale game will partly determine where Oceanside, Baldwin and East Meadow begin the playoffs. Oceanside is home against struggling Hicksville, Baldwin travels to Syosset, and East Meadow hosts Freeport.

In Conference II, the No. 1 seed is up for grabs when Garden City hosts MacArthur. Long Beach hosts Wantagh in another key matchup, while Carey hits the road to face Kennedy, and Elmont entertains Calhoun for Homecoming.

In Conference IV, the most interesting game on paper has West Hempstead traveling to Locust Valley for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
