My colleagues and I in the Senate  will also work toward passing our college affordability plan that doubles the existing tuition tax deduction and the maximum tuition tax credit to make college more affordable for our young people who want to pursue higher education. 

Ross: Reduce unemployment and bolster existing businesses, ensure all New Yorkers are treated equally regardless of gender, race, creed or economic status, implement better gun control and work to accomplish mandate relief.

Herald: Do you have a vision for how Belmont Park should be developed?

Martins: I believe the parking lot south of Hempstead Turnpike at Belmont provides opportunities for redevelopment consistent with the community’s vision for the area. I was able to include a stipend to explore redevelopment on the south lot in the budget, which resulted in an RFP being put forth by the New York State Empire Development Corporation. Responses to the RFP are due December 7 and specifics are available on the Empire State Development Corp. website. The RFP specifically doesn’t include a casino or low income housing but reflects the community’s vision that the area be developed in a way that will allow for economic activity, create jobs and provide real tax relief to the local communities.  

Ross: I would like to see new businesses which would complement the existing park and racetrack. Belmont Park offers great natural beauty and green space which should be preserved with any development. On the south side of the complex I would explore the creation of a business park, bring high quality year round employment.
