The summer theater season is heating up on our local stages once again. After a day at the beach — or instead of the beach — check out some of the many productions nearby. All are priced right (many are free), and with a wide range of shows to choose from, you’ll find that best of Broadway is close by – from classic musicals to musical revues, with some Shakespeare thrown in, of course, and always some something fun for the kids.
It’s an annual tradition to savor some outdoor theater this time of year and Plaza Theatrical Productions continues to stand out with well-received shows have are a staple of the local summer theater season. The Lynbrook-based theater company — founded by East Rockaway’s Kevin Harrington (a Molloy College alumnus), who expertly guides the company as artistic director —continues its welcome tradition of presenting free productions at nearby parks, libraries, and community centers, in addition to performances at its home stage in Bellmore, at The Showplace at Bellmore Movies. Plaza, which recently finished a run of “Young Frankenstein,” is preparing to open “Why Oh Why Can’t I: The Music of Judy Garland,” a musical tribute to the incomparable star of Hollywood’s Golden Era, next month.
This bouncy revue celebrates the memorable music of the revered entertainer, whose appeal remains timeless. Lisa Berman, Regina Spano and Joanna Connolly capture Garland’s special flair in such songs as “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “By the Light of the Silvery Moon,” “For Me & My Gal,” and, of course, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” You can follow that rainbow at Planting Fields in Oyster Bay on Aug. 2, at 6 p.m., or see it indoors at the Showplace at Bellmore Movies, on Aug. 17, at 2 p.m.
