Ask the Audiologist

Q: How long should it take me to get used to new hearing aids?

Posted

A: There are three separate aspects of getting used to new hearing aids. At Hearing Center of Long Island we use specialized techniques to help our patients with each of these as we guide them through the acclimation process:

1. Becoming comfortable with the feeling of wearing hearing aids.
As you read this, you feel your foot in your shoe. However, until you read the previous sentence you were likely unaware of that sensation. While the sensation of some types of hearing aids is nearly unnoticeable, it is normal to feel like you have something in your ears at first. This is because you do have something in your ears! With a proper fit, you will become just as acclimated to the feeling of your hearing aids as to the feeling of your most comfy shoes. Many of our patients tell us that after the initial acclimation period they tend to forget they are wearing their hearing aids.
