New appointments expected at Hempstead town board meeting tomorrow

The Hempstead town board is expected to announce several changes to its board at its Jan. 13 meeting.

Councilman James Darcy, who told the Herald last week that he was busy preparing for his move this week to district court, will leave the Town Board. It’s expected that Bruce Blakeman, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in November, will fill his vacancy. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano’s office formally announced Darcy’s appointment to the bench, pending Legislature confirmation, in a press release issued in late November. Darcy has served as a Town of Hempstead councilman since 2001.

Angie Cullin, who retired from the Board on Dec. 31, is expected to be replaced by Erin King Sweeney, daughter of Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford).

According to Mike Deery, communications director for the Town of Hempstead, “I believe the board has anticipated filling both vacancies tomorrow, and I believe Bruce Blakeman and Erin King Sweeney are the two people the board will consider."

A Newsday article confirmed the appointment of both people in a blog published Jan. 11.
