Sewanhaka: Pass the budget and the bond

The Sewanhaka School District has proposed a $175 million budget for 2014-15. Though it eliminates 13 teaching positions and one assistant principal, there are no glaring reductions of any student programs. It will add a new program aimed at students who aren’t thoroughly prepared for college, as well as an adult education program next spring. District officials have worked diligently to minimize spending cuts, and we encourage voters to pass this budget.

On Tuesday, residents will also vote on an $86.6 million bond for building renovations and upgrades, and we urge its approval as well. The more penny-pinching the district does now — in other words, the more times residents send district officials back to the drawing board — the worse off the buildings will become. It’s time to pass the bond.
