Sewanhaka High School’s Class of 2015 were joined by their families, friends, district administrators, Board of Education trustees and Senator Jack Martins at their commencement ceremony on June 27.

During the commencement, graduates were addressed by Senior Class President Breanna Washington, Salutatorian Aleena Imran and Valedictorian Shahzaib Saleem, who told his fellow graduates there was nothing more important in life than to be confident. He also reminded them to be steadfast in their life’s journey.

“Life is not all fun and games. Realistically there will be down sides, but that’s okay no one was ever judged by how easier their life was. You will be challenged in many ways, but you can’t give up, you have worked too hard, came too far to throw it all away now,” Saleem said.

Senator Jack Martins shared advice he recently bestowed on his daughter as she graduated from high school with the graduates.

“Never stop learning, ever. It’s not about the books. Put the books away for now. It’s about learning in every opportunity you have in life. Whether you go onto college or you’re going into the workplace or whether you are going into military service for our country learn, absorb and take in everything you can.”

Principal Lidowsky wished the graduates success in the future. She also presented the Harold W. Wright Memorial Award to Shahzaib Saleem and the Anthony T. Dwyer Memorial Award to Brenton Mighty.

Sewanhaka Central High School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie quoted Jim Hayhurst, Sr., author of “The Right Mountain: Lessons from Everest on the Real Meaning of Success.”

“Core values are vital sign posts of life. If you do not figure out what is at your core, what you stand for and what ultimately motivates you, you will always second-guess yourself, you will always have regrets. Uncover your core values and use them as a template to test your decisions in your life.”

The ceremony, which was highlighted by musical performances delivered by the Senior High chorus and band, continued with the conferring of diplomas and concluded with caps being thrown into the air.
