Ninth-grader Matheus Ottman, of Floral Park Memorial, was one of the country’s 34 highest-scoring freshmen in the February WordWright Challenge.

The WordWright Challenge is a national reading competition for students in grades 9 through 12 that requires analytical reading of many kinds of prose and poetry. The challenge emphasizes perceptive interpretation, sensitivity to language and an appreciation of style.

In addition to Ottman, students Italia Gorski and Keith Lappin placed among the 118 highest-scoring 9th graders nationwide. The students competed against more than 60,000 high school students from 47 states in the third WordWright Challenge of the academic school year.
