Baldwinite celebrates 100th birthday

Most people think Baldwinite Nettie Mitnick is in her late seventies or early eighties, according to Jeff Barkan. But in reality, she’s 100.

“You would never know it,” said Barkan, co-president of the South Baldwin Jewish Center and a longtime friend of Mitnick.

Mitnick’s life was celebrated on Sept. 12 at the Freidberg Jewish Community Center in Oceanside. She spends two days a week there in a senior group, whose leader describes her as the oldest yet most energetic member.

“She’s the most active,” Barkan said. “When they do exercises or activities, she’s the only one who does the whole thing.”

Mitnick was born Nettie Becker to Max & Sarah Becker on Sept. 9, 1918. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Russia. She married her husband, Bill, in 1941 and the two had two children: Harvey and Helaine. She lived on her own in Florida until two years ago and now lives in Baldwin.

She’s an avid reader and knitter.

She was presented with a proclamation by state Sen. John Brooks.
