Elmont celebrates a new school year

Elmont residents gathered at Elmont Road Park on Sept. 7 to celebrate the beginning of a new school year.

The Back to School Block Party was sponsored by Sen. Anna Kaplan, the New Jerusalem Cathedral, Sen. Todd Kaminsky, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen and the Nassau County Police Department. It featured free family entertainment, free haircuts, a school supply giveaway and free backpacks.

A group of anti-vaxxers also used the opportunity to protest Kaplan and Kaminsky’s support of a new law that eliminates the religious exemption for vaccines. Emily Pursino, an Amityville resident, said she went to the block party because she knew that the two senators were going to be in attendance, saying, “They voted to kick our kids out of school.”
