Queens woman charged in July 4 Leandra’s Law violation in Elmont

The Nassau County Police Department reported the arrest of a Queens woman who struck a mother and child as she drove while intoxicated on July 4, in Elmont.

Police said they arrived at the scene on Seville Street after receiving calls about a vehicle hitting a person at the location. They found a 31-year-old woman on the ground next to a 2008 Blue BMW holding her two-year-old son. Both victims were injured and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver, Kiran Choudhry, 28, was found with bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and unsteady on her feet, according to the police report. Police discovered a 5-year-old male in the back seat of the car, who was subsequently released into the custody of a relative after police arrested Choudhry.

Choudhry was charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law; two counts of assault, two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and various vehicle and traffic law violations. She was arraigned at the Town of Hempstead’s First District Court on July 5.
