First snow is light in Glen Cove

Snow started falling across Nassau County around 10 a.m. on Saturday, and by noon an inch to two inches had already accumulated. The National Weather Service was predicting three to five inches of the white stuff, with potentially higher totals on the North Shore.

But that prediction has not been true in Glen Cove, at least not yet. By 3 p.m. there has been only two inches of snow, said Manny Grella, the general foreman for the city’s dept. of public works. “It’s supposed to taper off by midnight and right now its light.”

The NWS said to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions, particularly because wet leaves combined with snow could make for slippery roads.

The NWS recommended that drivers lower speeds and be prepared for reduced visibility during the storm.

The city’s 16 trucks were out salting and sanding the roads since early this morning. “It’s drivable out there and the roadways are black,” Grella said. “The warm weather this week kept the ground pretty warm so it’s sticking, but not like it would have if the ground had been cold.”

Public works employees will remain at work until the storm is over. “If the temperature goes down to below freezing we will give it another shot of sand and salt,” Grella said. “And if the snow accumulates to 3-4 inches we will bring out the plows.”

For now, he, like everyone else in Glen Cove, is waiting to see what Mother Nature will do.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for parts of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including all of the Island, through Sunday morning.
