Arrest made in connection with criminal mischief, hate crime

Freeport Police report the arrested of a homeless man, 49-year-old Victor Wilson, on multiple charges of criminal mischief/hate crime at Our Holy Redeemer Church on South Ocean Avenue in the late hours of Thursday, August 13, and early morning hours of August 14.

According to a news release from the Nassau County Police, Wilson went into the front garden of Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church and placed articles of clothing over the heads of religious statues, in addition to breaking one. Freeport police officers recognized the defendant from previous arrests involving places of worship.

“An investigation by local detectives followed the incident and at 6:04 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, Freeport Police Officer Joseph Fernandez identified the subject,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Horton. “An arrest was made on Sunrise Highway in Freeport. Wilson is undomiciled [without a known address]. His last address was in Hempstead.”
