Attorney challenging town clerk incumbent

Nasrin Ahmad, a Republican, began working as a file clerk in the Town of Hempstead Clerk’s office in 1998, before rising to the position of town clerk in September 2013, appointed after Mark Bonilla abruptly left office. Prior to that, the Salisbury resident served in an advocacy role in Parent Teacher Associations in the East Meadow School District, where she founded clubs that promoted diversity and helped include foreign cultures into the schools.

Democratic challenger Dino Amoroso, of Lynbrook, has been an attorney for three decades. He is a partner at Amoroso & Associates, P.C., in New York City. In 1991, He began working as an assistant district attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s office. From 2006 to 2010, he was the president and CEO of Nassau Downs Off Track Betting, a public benefit betting and wagering corporation. He returned to the Kings County District Attorney’s office in June 2010 as a deputy district attorney until his retirement in 2013. He has engaged in private practice since.

Ahmad, who was born in Uganda and moved with her family to England when she was 6, arrived in the U.S. in 1984, and received her citizenship six years later. She and her husband, Naeem, have three children, all who graduated from the East Meadow School District.

Amoroso said he has given lectures to law students at various New York schools, and for 10 years taught fifth graders as a visiting teacher at St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf. He and his wife Patricia have two daughters.

Serving as a conduit between residents and the town board, the town clerk’s office’s many duties include providing licenses, certificates and permits, maintaining board records, processing rezoning applications and publishing notices of public hearings.

I have 15 years experience of working directly and indirectly in all aspects of this office’s work. For the past two years, I have provided service to the public as the town clerk, making their contact here a pleasant and hassle-free experience.
