Brookside Preserve gets a summer cleaning

Local volunteers gathered at the Brookside Preserve in Baldwin and Freeport on Aug. 9 to pick up trash and clean the waterways.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and legislators Laura Curran and Dave Denenberg organized the cleanup. According to the county’s website, the preserve is a 22-acre parcel of natural woodlands and freshwater wetlands that feature woods with red maple, white oak and cherry trees, along with numerous bird species, such as the wood thrush and tufted titmouse.

“It turned out to be a gorgeous day, and we had lots of families coming down to help,” Curran said. “Between the Baldwin and Freeport sides, we got out two TVs, one shopping cart, and countless glass and plastic bottles. Now it’s cleaner and more beautiful for the animals and birds who live there — and humans who come to enjoy this natural gem.”
