Hometown boy gives back to Freeport

Freeport High School alumnus and former National Football League star Morlon Greenwood hosted his foundation’s first annual football camp for Freeport students of all ages.

Greenwood, a member of the class of 1996, who played linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders, hosted a free-of-charge evening of football, food and fun on the field on Friday, July 10. The camp featured more than 200 participants from Freeport Public Schools and was led by members of the Morlon Greenwood Foundation. The event was also attended by members of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham and district staff members. Other athletes in attendance included alumni Clifton Smith, also a former NFL player, with the Washington Redskins, and Eddie Gordon, a UFC fighter. Dr. Kuncham and members of the Board of Education presented Russ Cellan, a coach from the foundation, with an award to commend his efforts.

During the program, grouped students worked with Greenwood and members of his foundation to learn the fundamentals of football. Students participated in drills designed to teach skills such as speed-racing, tackling and proper stances, and took part in friendly competitions with each other.

The camp not only brought district students and families together for an evening of football fun, but also served as an opportunity for a proud hometown star to give back to Freeport.
