Incumbents Laura Curran and Kevan Abrahams easily held on to their respective seats in the Nassau County Legislature Tuesday night, according to unofficial returns from the Nassau Board of Elections.

Also, Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, a Republican, kept her job, besting Democratic challenger Michael Reid 58.26 percent to 41.72 percent.

Curran beat Republican challenger Michael S. Vista for the 5th Legislative District seat by a vote of 5,814 to 2,957.

"I'm grateful for winning the confidence of the residents of my district, and I'm really looking forward to continuing working hard for them," Curran said Tuesday night. Curran is completing her first term in office.

With the votes in all precincts counted, the returns showed Curran, a Democrat, had 66.26 percent of the vote compared to Vista's 33.70 percent. There were four write-in votes, for a total of .05 percent of the vote.

Democrat Abrahams swamped his opponent, James C. Majors, a Republican, 84.77 percent to 15.23 percent, with all votes counted.

"I don't know about you, but I'm excited about Madeline Singas," Abrahams said. Abrahams won his 1st Legislative District seat with a vote of 5,592 to 1,005.

In the 4th Legislative District, which includes a small portion of Baldwin, incumbent Legislator Denise Ford also kept her seat by a vote of 6,943 to 4,311.

Ford, a Republican, defeated Democrat Keith S. Lebowitz 61.69 percent to 38.30 percent. "I just want to thank everybody for their support, Ford told her supporters. Without the people coming out to vote, I wouldn't keep winning."

King Sweeney, a Republican, defeated Reid 11,732 votes to 8,401. There were four write-in votes, for a total of .02 percent of the vote. King Sweeney received 58.26 percent of the votes to Reid's 41.72 percent.

"I"m delighted by the results. We worked really hard and we're going to work even harder," she said Wednesday morning. "I'm particularly pleased we did well in Baldwin. My first stop the day after the election was to thank supporters in Baldwin. I look forward to doing all that I can to revitalize downtown Baldwin."

King Sweeney began serving on the town board in January following the retirement of Angie Cullen.
