James McDermott dies at 55

Was Lynbrook chief of department twice

Former Lynbrook Fire Department Chief James McDermott died last week at the age of 55.

McDermott was born on Sept. 14, 1960 in Oceanside, one of eight children of Francis and Thomas McDermott. He Jim graduated Maria Regina High School in 1979.

McDermott was hired by the New York City Police Department in June of 1983 and retired as a sergeant 1995. He joined Rescue Hook, Ladder & Bucket Company No. 1 of the Lynbrook Fire Department in 1980 and was elected captain of Truck Company in 1989. He served as a trustee of the company from 1992 until 2016.

McDermott served as chief of the department for the first time in 2002 and then again in 2012. He was the only person to ever be elected to serve a second term as chief in the 115-year history of the Lynbrook Fire Department.

McDermott is survived by his siblings Joseph, Ann, Debra, Michael, Thomas, Patrick and Mark; and his three children Alyssa, James and Sean, and a grandson, Logan.
