The First Squad reports an arrest for burglary on Saturday, July 18, at 11:50 a.m. in Freeport.

According to detectives, while on an unrelated investigation in the Freeport area, detectives observed Nikolas Balalaos, 26, of Atlantic Avenue, in Freeport, walking at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and West End Avenue. One of the detectives recognized Balalaos as the suspect from a burglary at DQ Bar, located at 382 Atlantic Avenue, in Freeport, which occurred on Saturday, April 11. The detectives attempted to stop the suspect and he fled on foot initiating a foot pursuit.

The suspect was located swimming in a canal between Anchor Street and Dock Drive, swimming southbound toward Baldwin Bay. A civilian boat owner provided assistance, transporting the detectives in his boat. The detectives were able to take the suspect into custody in the rear of a location on Eastern Boulevard without incident. No injuries were reported.

Balalaos is charged with third-degree burglary. Police report he also had an open Nassau County warrant for criminal possession of a controlled substance.
