The stars shine bright in Freeport

Stars, luminous points of light that glitter the night sky, were shining bright in Freeport on Thursday, Jan. 7, when more than a dozen Freeport school alumni – musicians and singers – returned to honor their school and community in a benefit concert to raise funds and awareness for the Freeport Educational Foundation. The evening - Freeport Stars of Today and Tomorrow - featured a medley of musical performances and styles including Broadway show tunes, jazz and blues.

The Freeport Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative programs within the Freeport Public Schools that will  “provide extraordinary learning experiences,” reads its website. The FEF raises money through outreach to alumni and community residents through corporate sponsors and individual donors and through events like this one. To date, they have provided $28,215 in grants for 11 different programs as well as four scholarships in the amount of $500 each for members of the Class of 2016.

“Dodd changed my life,” Elizabeth Hashagen, master of ceremonies and Freeport alumna said. “Freeport schools provided me with guidance and vision. I began singing and they helped train me.” Hashagen, who went on to sing professionally before becoming a journalist, reminded audience members to “tell people about the great work we can do here to help Freeport’s children.”
