What I wouldn't do for some Jimmy Choos

It discourages me to see women falling for the same old snake oil pitch that they need to wear a particular shoe or carry a certain handbag or fit into a size 2 in order to be beautiful or successful. We want our girls to become women who feel good enough about themselves to forgo the shoe-friendly surgeries advertised by one doctor. As long as it’s legal and profitable, doctors will do the procedures; it’s the women who have to opt out.

The practice of foot binding was commonplace a thousand years ago, yet it seems like yesterday. In fact it was yesterday that I saw an ad inviting me to undergo a “Cinderella” foot procedure to “resize” my toenails. Hmmm. They did that in China, too — in POW camps, when they wanted to get information out of somebody.
