Bachata's sensual rhythms on a Sunday

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month the Freeport Memorial Library welcomed Los Amigos del Amargue, a Dominican bachata group from Freeport on Sept. 30. As the sounds of the Caribbean came to life, Freeporter and frontman, Luis Cordero performed a series of popular Latin music covers and original works of the band. The concert provided a diverse and excitable pan-Latino dance-style music experience.
Cordero is from Tenares, Dominican Republic. In 1973, he moved to Santo Domingo, where he formed his first band playing merengue, bachata and boleros.  By 1978 he moved and settled in Freeport where he formed “Los Alegres Dominicanos” and played at local restaurants and bars.
Over the years, Cordero and Los Amigos del Amargue have released a number of albums and songs like “Carta a Mi Padre,” — “A Letter to my Father.” Cordero composes the songs band plays. The music reflects romance, struggles his home and life experience through the sounds and accordion, the tambora, the guira, the bongos and maracas.
