On the morning of June 5, employees with Lynbrook’s Department of Public Works were tree-trimming on Blossom Heath when they saw black smoke billowing from the rear area of a house and detached garage on the corner of Blossom Heath and Sherman Street.

The employees were Charlie Curcio, Aidan Ryder, Mike Koerner, and Joe Fazzino.  Upons eeing the smoke, they ran to the house and found that the back of the home's detached garage was on fire. The blaze was consuming the outside back wall of the garage. The group grabbed the homeowner’s garden hose and used to it try and extinguish the fire.

While they were working, a neighbor who also saw the smoke called the Lynbrook Fire Department. The homeowner was not home, but arrived just before the firefighters. When firefighters got to the scene, they were under the command of Second Assistant Chief John Donald. They checked the exterior wall and determined that the fire had not extended to the roof or inside the garage.

The fire was believed to be caused by coals from the homeowner's fire pit that was used the night before. Eventually, the blaze was extinguished. The DPW employees were recognized for their quick action at the Lynbrook village board meeting on June 17.
