A Molloy College student’s production about the Lions volleyball squad’s stellar 2017 season was named a nominee for the 39th College Television Awards.

The competition, run by the Television Academy Foundation, recognizes and rewards excellence in student-produced programs. The 25 nominees were selected from more than 600 productions submitted by 174 colleges and universities nationwide. Designed to emulate the Emmys, the student entries are judged online by active Television Academy members.

Molloy senior Matthew Considine, 22, of Lindenhurst, produced, directed and wrote the seven-minute production, called “Molloy Volleyball: A Cinderella Story.” It documents the women’s volleyball team’s historic season, during which they won their first-ever East Coast Conference Championship and competed in the 2017 NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.

“I was really proud of the piece that I did,” he said, noting that he has earned four other awards for the production. On the first day of the semester, he got the news of his latest nomination in an email. “It was really unbelievable, kind of seemed unreal.”

A communications major, Considine has been shooting photography and videos for Molloy’s athletic department over his four years at the college. “That volleyball team last year was doing really, really well, so they were kind of on our radar,” he said.

He would film some of their home games, and even took a bus to Connecticut, where the team competed in the NCAA tournament, ultimately losing in the second round. Though he had previously done recaps and music video montages for various Molloy sports, Considine said, “I knew that I really wanted to do something more story-driven with it.” He later interviewed several members of the team and the coach, who reflected on the season, and the video was published on YouTube last March.

Three student-produced projects were nominated in each of eight categories, including drama, comedy, animation, nonfiction, promotional, news, sports, and variety. One winner will be announced in each category.

Television stars will present top honors to students at the awards ceremony on March 16 at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California. Each winning project will receive a $3,000 cash prize.
