Vote ‘yes’ on West Hempstead spending plan

Posted

In West Hempstead, residents should show their support for the proposed $63.6 million school budget. It calls for 4.01 percent more spending and a 2.64 percent tax-levy increase — below the district’s tax-levy cap — and would maintain all academic programs, athletics and co-curricular activities.
The 2019-20 spending plan would also help the district to develop its K-6 math program, Spanish for Native Speakers, courses on design and drawing for production, along with computer graphics and web design.
We encourage voters to approve the budget on Tuesday.

For trustee: Brohm, Cole, Greaves

The Herald endorses Karen Brohm, the Board of Education’s current president, who is being opposed by Zalman Hagler. A lifelong West Hempstead resident who has served on the board for seven years, Brohm understands the school district’s needs. During her years on the board, the district has expanded educational opportunities for students that include increasing the number of Advanced Placement courses. The Herald is confident that she will continue supporting such goals.
We also endorse Byars Cole, who is running for re-election against Gavi Hoffman. Cole, who was elected to the board in 2017, has been part of several successes in the district over the past year, including the expansion of programs such as STEM, fine arts and media and professional development. We also believe that Cole’s initiatives to boost academic and extracurricular programs make him a strong candidate.
The Herald also supports Patricia Greaves, who is running for re-election against Abraham Peller. Greaves has three children who attended West Hempstead schools. She said that she believes in the value of a strong public education system. She has said that she would continue urging residents to be more active in the school community if she is re-elected.
