Charles Lavine decides not to run for County Executive

The Herald Gazette just received an email from Assemblyman Charles Lavine, a contender for county executive, indicating that he has decided not to run. Below is his statement.

I have determined that it is in the best interests of our Nassau County community for me to end my campaign for County Executive. The people of Nassau County deserve far better than the corruption and mismanagement that is now systemic in the Nassau County Republican Party. Those who support Laura Curran and those who support me share the same passion for good and honest government. No good will come from a primary pitting Laura's supporters against mine. A primary between us will be counterproductive and will in the end serve only to weaken our ability to restore effective government to Nassau County. Laura will be an extraordinary County Executive and I will support her because Nassau County deserves to be governed by someone with dedication, honesty and strength.

I have always believed that our county government must serve everyone, not simply the privileged few who have political ties to the Republican Party. While my campaign ends today, our work together continues. I will fight harder than ever in the Assembly to ensure that the progressive values we share are at the forefront of our public policy. It is because of your relentless support that my voice on these matters can be heard on Long Island and in Albany.

I want everyone who stood with me to know how grateful I am for their friendship and support and I urge each of them to continue in our battle for good government by joining with me to campaign for my friend and colleague Laura Curran."
