Exploring the season beyond the pumpkin patch

The short season that is fall seems to come and go before we know it. So now’s the time to savor being outdoors and enjoy all that is so special about this time of year. The weekends are full of activities and festivals that celebrate the best of autumn. You don’t have to go far to explore all the delights of the season.

Colors of the season at Old Westbury Gardens
Fall is a vibrant time at Old Westbury Gardens as the change of seasons brings about a colorful array of flowers and fauna. The treasured Gardens take on a different dimension during this time of year in the crisp air.
“Anyone who drives all the way to Vermont just to take pictures of maple trees is a sap,” according to Gardens spokesman Vince Kish. “Understandably, many visitors to Old Westbury Gardens think in terms of the spring and summer as the primary seasons to visit here. But there’s actually a lot going on in October.”
“Old Westbury Gardens provides a perfect alternative to the long drive and expense of a trip up to New England. In addition to the beautiful foliage that fills many areas of our 200 acres of grounds, the Walled Garden is filled with a wide variety of asters, dahlias, chrysanthemums, and other colorful fall flowers and plants. And as the thousands of deciduous trees start to lose their colorful leaves, new unique vistas that are not available at other times of the year are revealed. Also admission, which is always a bargain at any time of the year, is reduced during October. ”
This weekend, visitors of all ages can participate in a Leaf Walk, on Saturday, Oct.11, to observe the magic of the season’s leaf color change, which is followed by a craft activity. Participants can make a marbled leaf painting that captures the transformation of the estate’s landscape.
