Sings to seniors at Island Park nursing home

Island Park’s Daisy Troop 2190 took its first field trip to South Point Plaza Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Feb. 8, where they performed Valentine’s Day songs for a couple dozen of the facility’s seniors.

The Girl Scout troop of 16 kindergarteners — in their first year as a group — sang songs and danced for the residents, and later gave them hand-made Valentine’s hearts and chocolates.

“That energy, if we could bottle it, I’m tired from watching them,” laughed Jeanette Murray, a five-year resident of South Point Plaza. “It’s been wonderful. I enjoyed it.”

Another resident of five years, Christopher Ross, said the experience was unique and that he hopes more children will visit in the future.

“This is very exciting to see young kids come in and embrace the nursing home patients,” Ross said. “It cheers up their day. It cheers my day up.”

Vicky Shaw, the center’s assistant administrator, said she plans on inviting the girls back to do arts and crafts with the seniors.

“We just wanted to bring some happiness and cheer,” said Troop Leader Tracy Marrero. “They love singing to put a smile on the residents’ faces.”
