Former Baldwin and Oceanside resident Devin Logan, a member of the U.S. Olympic team competing in Sochi, Russia, won a silver medal in the women's slopestyle skiing event early Tuesday morning.

After earning a spot in the finals in the qualifying round hours earlier, Logan took the silver with a score of 85.40. Canada’s Dara Howell won the gold medal, scoring 94.20, and fellow Canadian Kim Lammare took the bronze with a score of 85.00.

Logan, who will turn 21 next Monday, made her Olympic debut in slopestyle's qualifying runs on Tuesday at 1 a.m. EST. The finals began at 4 a.m. EST. Sochi is nine hours ahead of New York.

Going into the Olympics, Logan had an overall rank of 1 from the Association of Freestyle Professionals, with a 3 in slopestyle and a 7 in the halfpipe.

Emailing the Herald from Sochi, she recalled her early days on the South Shore. “I spent K-3 at the Meadow School in Baldwin, then moved to Oceanside,” she wrote through her publicist, Justine Spence, who was with her at the Olympics. “Grades four through eight were spent at School Two in Oceanside.”

Devin’s mother, Nancy, told the Herald that the family lived on Baldwin Harbor Point Road in Baldwin Harbor, and then on Woods Avenue in Oceanside. In Baldwin, Devin played football with the Baldwin Bombers. “She was the quarterback and the only girl on the team from about 8 years old to 10 years old,” Nancy recalled. “And she played with the Baldwin Eagles Soccer Club.”

In Oceanside, Devin was a member the Oceanside Soccer Club and Oceanside Lacrosse. In junior high, she wrote, she loved George Wynn, who was and still is the phys. ed. teacher there.

Right before her freshman year in high school, she moved to West Dover, Vt., with her mother and four siblings.

When she isn’t training, Logan is working on her college education, currently attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
