Fire prevention lessons at Francis X. Hegarty

October is designated National Fire Prevention Month. During this time, fire departments across the country travel to their local elementary and middle schools to teach youngsters proper safety measures they should use during a fire or other emergency.

Members of the Island Park Volunteer Fire Department visited Francis X. Hegarty School on Friday, October 3 to review with students common safety practices including the Stop, Drop, and Roll technique and EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home). The presentations to students in grades k-4 included an instructional video, followed by a demonstration of firefighting equipment.

Ex-Chief Raymond Reichel explained to kindergartners some of the actions they should take to protect themselves in case of a fire.
