Q: Should I let my Chihuahua play with the larger dogs at the dog park?

Posted

A:There are many large breed dogs that play well with smaller dogs however a pet owner should always be careful with such a large discrepancy in weight classes.  Even playing with a dog of similar size can lead to accidental injury at a dog park by accidentally tripping or getting into a dog fight.  But if a 5lbs Chihuahua is running around with a 100lbs German Shephard the risk for extensive injury is much greater.

The most important things prior to taking your pet to a dog park is to make sure they are properly vaccinated and socialized.  You should aim to have your pet play with pets of similar size.   It will be important to find other pets that are properly vaccinated and socialized as well. You should always aim to see how pets get along prior to allowing them to run around off leash.  Sometimes, you can see signs of aggression during an introduction that can prevent an accident from happening later on.
