The court case was adjourned or postponed more than 25 times over the intervening years. Court records obtained by the Herald show that it was adjourned one more time on May 21, at the request of the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District, Loretta Lynch, because “as part of the review of the proposed terms of settlement, the United States has requested that the Village provide updated information concerning its financial condition, including information concerning the impact of Superstorm Sandy on the Village finances and tax base.”

Lynch went on to say, “This information is essential to evaluating the terms of payment in the proposed agreement, including the proposed settlement amount and pay-out period most recently proposed by the Village.”

Court records show that the parties have been ordered to report a settlement in the case by Sept. 4.

Statistics from the 2010 Census show that there are 4,655 residents in Island Park, 64 of whom — less than 2 percent — are black.

Island Park officials said only that a village meeting would be held “in the near future” to detail the settlement.

Chamber of Commerce President Glenn Ingoglia perhaps best summed up the sentiments of most Island Park residents when he said, “Let’s hope that this is finally the end.”
