Valley Stream officials brace for another major snowstorm

All of Long Island is now under a Blizzard Watch from late Monday, March 13, into Wednesday, March 15.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service are predicting up to 18 inches of snow and high winds for Long Island as a powerful nor’easter sweeps into the area. If predictions hold true, the storm could become one of the biggest March snowstorms in recorded history.

Snow is expected to start to fall late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The period of greatest impact will likely be Tuesday, beginning with the morning commute and lasting through the evening, forecasters say.

"The village has been down this road before," Mayor Ed Fare said. "Our employees are experienced professionals in storm preparation, during the storm and in the aftermath."

In addition to typical preparations for snowfall, Fare said officials have rented an emergency generator to power warming stations set up throughout the village in the event of power failure. The warming centers are located at Village Hall, the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library and the five firehouses.

"Our Office of Emergency Management will be staffed and fully functional throughout the storm," Fare said. "And we have been in contact with local, town, county and state officials. As well as the national weather service."
